Former Hoosier Baller Steve Alford left his legacy in the hands of a men's basketball program at the University of Indiana where he graduated in 1980, but this former star IU Hoosier native and now receives recognition for his contribution to sport the famous Indiana: a place Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Alford has recently been chosen to lead the 2009 class of inductees to the Hall of Fame, becoming the eighth honoree do in its first year of eligibility. Join the ranks of Oscar Robertson, Rick Mount, George McGinnis, Kurt Benson, Larry Bird, Kyle Macy and Dave Colescott, This two-time All-American, 1987 NCAA champion and 1984 Olympic gold medalist will receive his moment of glory in the spotlight this spring when he is inducted at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame 26 years after he graduated from high school.
Alford, a New Castle, Indiana native is one four former players of basketball at Indiana University to be inducted into Hall of Fame this year, paving the way among other IU alums Wayne Radford Indianapolis (Arlington), Steve Bouchie of Washington and Ted Kitchel Cass. Radford is part of IU in 1976 championship team, while Bouchie and Kitchel played IU for 1981 championship team. Other heroes Basketball Indiana among 14 selected to be inducted into the Hall of Fame this spring are: San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich Spurs of Merrillville head coach and Milwaukee Bucks Scot Skiles Plymouth.
While Steve Alford is most often in the news these days for his coaching reign at the University of New Mexico, the former Hooper has been in the spotlight of the world basketball standout since his days as a hotshot New Castle Chrysler High School, where the teenager average of 37.7 points per game his senior year and was chosen as Mr. Basketball of Indiana in 1983. Contributing significantly to greater pastime of Indiana, Alford next attended IU and played ball under the legendary Bobby Knight, where fans with tickets to Indiana Hoosiers Hoop looked for one of the best teams in school in the nation. Alford was the first player to be named team MVP four times while paying 2438 points in the net of Hoosiers in its mandate as a college player. He was also part of the basketball team of the United States for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, playing alongside by Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Sam Perkins and Chris Mullin to return the gold. Last year Steve Alford played for IU was his most monumental win the 1987 NCAA Championship game against Syracuse University, while contributing 23 points in the match.
After college, Alford was selected as the 26th choice overall draft pick in the NBA in 1987, playing for the Dallas Mavericks until 1991. The legend of Indiana continued to remain under the spotlight after leaving the NBA, sparks with his fellow 1990 book Playing for Knight – My six seasons with Coach Knight, A Tell-all account of the game under Bobby Knight at the college and the team Olympic basketball. Since then, the player basketball has been phenomenal on the other side of the court, coach Manchester College, Missouri and Iowa, before taking the reins at New Mexico in 2007. Alford is currently in his second year coaching Lobos, and his induction into the Hall of Indiana basketball of Fame is icing on the cake for his incredible athletic career.
